Woodie Flowers: Caden Sipe

A great mentor not only teaches but inspires. Caden Sipe is that mentor—a guiding force, coach, friend, and a leader. In addition to his role in robotics, Caden is also the Mayor, demonstrating his commitment to serving and improving the lives of those around him. His dedication ensures that students in our district receive the support they need to thrive. Caden is a vital part of our robotics community, whether guiding young minds through 15 FTC teams or working with high schoolers in FRC.

Caden’s journey in FIRST began long before he became a mentor; he was once in our shoes. As a high school student, he was THE original founding member of 4125 Confidential. He had to recruit his classmates to make a team. His firsthand experience with the challenges and triumphs of competitive robotics gives him a unique perspective. He now guides new generations with empathy and direct insight.

What makes Caden stand out isn’t just his technical skills but his commitment to people. He doesn’t solve problems; he helps us discover the solutions ourselves, fostering independence, critical thinking, and confidence. His ability to grow with the team and tackle new challenges makes him more than just a mentor—he is family. He sees our potential and helps us realize it.

Caden understands that success in robotics comes from teamwork and leadership. He brings students together, encouraging collaboration and showing us that the strongest teams are built on trust and support. Whether introducing middle schoolers to STEAM or pushing high schoolers to refine their skills, he remains a steady source of motivation.

Caden’s impact goes beyond competitions. He embodies the values of FIRST—gracious professionalism, inclusion, and perseverance. He bridges the gap between different competition levels, ensuring younger students are prepared for future challenges. His mentorship extends beyond the season.

Caden has a way of making experiences unforgettable. When I was in middle school competing in FTC, I made a bet with him that if my team made it to Worlds, he would get a tattoo of my signature bird drawing. He later admitted he had never been so scared of a team winning. Though we didn’t make it, the bet lives on, and I am determined to see Caden get that tattoo one day.

Last summer, my best friend and I had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., to advocate for Oregon schools alongside our superintendent and Caden. While the superintendent attended meetings, Caden took us to explore, visit museums, and experience history firsthand. His mentorship isn’t just about robotics—it’s about shaping well-rounded, engaged individuals.

When we think of Caden Sipe, one word comes to mind: dedicated. He has given his time, energy, and passion to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. Robotics isn’t just about building robots—it’s about building people. Because of Caden, we are stronger, more confident, and more prepared for the future.
